When it comes to shared ownership, the emphasis is often on demand, access and “a foot on the property ladder”. Our ‘Shared Ownership Insights: buyback’ report takes a longer term perspective focusing on why shared owners sell their homes, challenges for resale and why buyback might sometimes be the best, or only, option.
We explore why buyback matters, why it is not offered more widely, why it should be, and offer some proposals for a clear, fair and mandatory framework to:
- support improved access to and exit from shared ownership homes
- reduce the loss of social housing to the open market, and
- restore public confidence in shared ownership.
