Read on….

Until the necessary legislation is in place through the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024, there remains at present no statutory right for shared owners to extend their lease. However, most shared ownership landlords will agree to this on a voluntary basis. This is an approach encouraged by Homes England with its Capital Funding Guide stating the following (as at 13 October 2026).

Shared owners wishing to extend their lease should discuss this with their landlord and seek appropriate legal assistance. Additionally, the Leasehold Advisory Service  provides a lot of useful information about leases and lease extensions. There is also reference to lease extensions within Homes England’s Key Information Document.

We are extremely grateful for the support of Homes England in creating this content.
